It's only on very very rare occasions that I wish I was older, wiser and scarier! But it was hard not to feel so today:
(Time: Recess - Place: my classroom)
*classroom door opens slowly*
Hamad and Abdulla: Ms. Mariam you told us we could come in recess to finish the poster?
Me: sure go ahead, grab the markers and get to work.
Hamad: Teacher you wear glasses!
Me: Yep, for reading I do.
Hamad: But why do you wear glasses? are you big or small?
Me: Huh? You mean like my age?
Hamad: Yes.
Me: I'm 22.
Hamad: OLLAAAHHH (this is a purely kuwaiti exclamation word! I like it!) teacher you are very small.
Need I remind him that he's, like, NINE. Honestly.
And another delightful convo with one of the boys from 4A- the crazy class.
(Time: praying recess- Place: playground)
Abdulaziz: Miss Mariam why do you get upset from us in class and yell.
Me: Gee I dunno, maybe cuz you act crazy.
Abdulaziz: hehehehe
Me: Do you act like this in other classes? Do you do this in the English class?
Abdulaziz: oh NO. We don't make a single sound in the English class.
Me: WHY???
Abdulaziz: because we are scared of the teacher very much.
Me: What! why are you not scared of me???
Abdulaziz: Because you are kind.
Right.
Note to self: for instant classroom discipline results, become a mean old lady:P

but I feel I have to tell you. You are NEVER going to become a mean old lady. Never. That's not to say that ba3da 3umrin taweel you won't become old, that it isn't within your power to be a "lady" (hehe), or that you can't be mean (cat-eaten chicken breast anyone?). It's just that you can never be mean to kids, and you're just too sweet to become a scary hag (a good thing).
If I had to guess, you'd be the giggly grandma, fun and sweet (the female version of 'Ammo Ya32ub perhaps? :)
Good luck getting your students to behave, using non-scary techniques of course. Oh, and istamti3i bi shababek.
Last thing. 3adi, you can admit to watching soaps. We know you do :P
I SO DO NOT watch soaps woman:P
But you're one to talk, Ms. Oh I "accidently on purpose" switched to the channel with PASSIONS on and "mysteriously" the remote control froze and it's not working anymore:P
yeah yeah. You prolly also send them fan mail!:P
I'll admit to one thing though. Have you ever watched a soap on TV with the "mute" button pressed, so you can only read the arabic subtitles?
OH-MY-GOD.
I experienced that once in the gym.
I've never laughed harder on anything!:D
ماذا تقصد؟؟؟ جوناثان الأخ الضائع لسيرينا و الأب المختفي لتومي؟؟؟؟ الوغد
PRICELESS exprience I tell you!
Hilarious. I know what you mean. The TV doesn't even have to be mute. I actually find them extremely distracting and HAVE to always read them (since they're there, duh!). It might detract from watching the comedy experience in one way, but it provides lots of comedy on its own.
Did I mention that reading English subtitles in Hindi movies provides the same amusement factor. I watched one so far, but seriously... on the floor laughing the whole time. Example: Guy picking up girl at airport. He asks her: "Do you need help with your language?"
Priceless.
You know what they say here, "Don't smile till Christmas." I could never do it, though!
Yeah I heard as much, but it's kind of an impossible task for me too!:)
I've been facing this problem with my Injaz class, but not just in terms of having a hard time controlling the class.. it's the other teachers who are not taking me seriously because they keep mistaking me for a student!!! I got yelled at a couple of times! NOT pleasant! UUGGHHHH!
hehehehehe
I know what you're talking about Lina!
Last year when I started working at the school, I was always mistaken for a student and almost got detention a coupla times;P
Yells and detentions aside, WE WILL PREVAIL! (I hope:) hehe)
